Unix Systems Admin

Blizzard Entertainment is seeking an experienced UNIX administrator to join a team of system administrators. The team goal is to maintain and optimize the UNIX servers. The candidate should be a dedicated problem solver who can multitask and prioritize tasks in a fast-paced and demanding environment.

Required Skills

  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Capability of writing purchase justifications, training users in complex topics, making presentations to an internal audience, and interacting positively with upper management
  • An in-depth understanding of a UNIX-based operating system, including system installation/configuration, file system concepts, resource monitoring, user administration, kernel tuning, package management, and process control/management
  • An in-depth understanding of UNIX network services--specifically, the ability to install, configure, and troubleshoot TCP/IP-based services such as DHCP, DNS, SMTP, and HTTPD
  • Ability to write scripts in an administrative language (Perl, Python or shell)
  • Basic understanding of Microsoft Windows, user administration, networking, and IIS 5/6
Experience Requirement
  • 3-5 years of system administration experience with an emphasis in managing customer-facing applications and services
Desirable Background and Skills
  • A degree in computer science or a related field
  • Significant programming background in any applicable language
Responsibilities Include:
  • Receiving general instructions from a supervisor
  • Administering a complex site alone or assisting in the administration of a larger site
  • Helping plan and initiate future growth of the site/network
  • Managing novice system administrators or operators
  • Evaluating and/or recommending purchases (these recommendations will have a strong influence on the purchasing process)
  • Sharing in off-hour/on-call duties
