Production
Producers and associate producers help in the overall development of each game, acting as facilitators, managers, communicators, and leaders. Production encompasses coordinating the efforts of programmers, artists, and designers to ensure that the game is completed within a realistic timeline and budget, and at a high level of quality.
Qualities we look for: We are looking for highly organized individuals with outstanding communication abilities and proven experience in project management to help with the production of projects.
- Scheduling - Develop skills in scheduling personnel from multiple disciplines to meet project goals and timelines. This includes the identification and mitigation of project risks and technical and logistical interdependencies.
- Development Structures - There are many different components to game development that must come together in order to ship a successful product. It is crucial that a producer understands how to structure a team based on the type of game that is being developed. As a result, individuals pursuing a career in production should develop detailed knowledge of all of the components that make up a game (e.g., 3D models, textures, game code, network code, sound effects, particle effects, tools, etc.), as well as which disciplines are responsible for creating these components, and the specific job responsibilities of the corresponding personnel. These components will vary depending on the genre of the game being developed.
- Project Management - This includes managing not only the personnel involved in the development of the game, but also all of the peripheral elements that are required to ship a game. Examples include interfacing with other departments (quality assurance, technical support, customer service, business development, etc.), licensing required software, writing budgets, coordinating product manufacturing, and a myriad of other responsibilities. A successful producer will have a clear understanding of the "big picture," and be capable of putting together the pipeline and processes required to take a game from inception to the store shelves.
- Market Knowledge - A producer needs to understand the game market, know the target audience, and stay abreast of what the competition is doing.
